🕊️ The Story of Na’Ziyah Harris

The case of Na’Ziyah Harris is a heartbreaking story of a 13-year-old Detroit girl whose disappearance shocked her community and raised serious questions about the adults who were supposed to protect her. Na’Ziyah was last seen on January 9, 2024, after getting off her school bus in Detroit. She never made it home, and her body has never been recovered.

Investigators eventually focused on Jarvis Butts, a man who was connected to Na’Ziyah through her family. Prosecutors presented evidence including phone records, surveillance footage, witness testimony, and Na’Ziyah’s communications with Butts. Authorities also reported that clothing believed to be what Na’Ziyah was wearing when she disappeared was recovered near the Rouge River. In September 2024, Butts was charged in connection with her murder and sexual abuse.

The case became even more disturbing as investigators uncovered allegations that Na’Ziyah had been sexually abused and that concerns about her safety had previously been reported. The investigation raised difficult questions about whether warning signs were missed and whether more could have been done to protect her.

There has since been a major development: in February 2026, Butts pleaded guilty to Na’Ziyah’s murder as well as multiple sexual-assault charges involving other minors. Under the plea agreement, he also agreed to provide truthful information regarding the location of Na’Ziyah’s body.
